We hope children will return after a break ready and eager to jump back into the daily routine, but there are always some children who struggle with separation anxiety—just like at the beginning of the school year. Be calm and understanding as you acknowledge the children’s feelings. Remind children of their favorite classroom activities and opportunities to play with friends. Parents and educators alike both have stated one of the most successful strategies used is asking a child struggling with readjustment to draw one of the morning messages. If the message is drawn at home, allow the child to bring it to school. This usually helps to engage the child in the classroom community and builds on the children’s love of being classroom helpers. If that doesn’t work, move on with the daily routine and let the child enter activities gradually, as he or she is ready. This strategy may require parents to amend the morning routine some. Be sure to remain calm and understanding. Wishing everyone a fun and successful first day back to school from winter break!
